Artifact 2a: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
During my second placement I taught at the after school program. I was in a third grade class at the Parma Learning Center where the main focus was to aid students in homework, reading and math skills. We also did various enrichment activities. It was really important for me to get to know the students because I was the one going in mid year into their class. We started by solidifying our class rules and mapping out goals for the rest of the year. We also did community building activities. I read the book, Only One You by Linda Kranz in Spanish and English, then we discussed the message, how we are all unique, and thought about wisdom that we have for others. We followed this by doing the following art project which I believe really built a sense of community.

Artifact 2b: Establishing a Culture for Learning
What I really appreciated during my first placement in a bilingual kindergarten classroom was the diversity of learners in my classroom. It was so important to establish a sense of pride for bilingualism in my classroom. This meant having a show and teach period at the end of the day, displaying students work because they cared about their accomplishments and improvements. The following artifact is a display board of student work. The picture of the animals was created by three of our parent volunteers. It was a collaboration that my class really wanted to share with the school so we did. I had done a read aloud of the book The Mitten by Jan Brett in Spanish. Then I carried this read aloud and incorporated it into our math centers and writer's workshop. The work shown was done at one of the centers I created where students made mini books and changed the ending of the story. Then they completed a cloze activity.

Artifact 2c: Managing Classroom Procedures
Towards the end of the year in my third grade placement, schedules got very busy as we were preparing and taking the SBACS. It was definitely challenging because my class got split up so I had to schedule lessons accordingly and make sure our time together was used effectively. I decided to to instructional groups for the measurement math unit because of this. I jigsawed the groups into centers and they had to transition through different activities. The students did a great job of taking initiative in their groups and transitions were smooth because we used the first day to go over all of them before the class got split up. The center shown is a capacity prediction center. Students had to predict how much different house hold containers could hold. Then they had to convert the measurements from gallons to quarts, pints or cups.
